Tree Lines
Tree Lines, Emma Alexander Arthur (2013)
This is a cross-section of a tree that had recently been cut down in a park near where I live. It is one of my favourite places to walk when I don't want to drive. The tree was huge, the lines clear and the colours bright. It was the perfect opportunity to take a photograph as it was so unique to find such a beautiful cross-section. I lined up my shot but realised that the lighter colour on the right was too dominating so I looked around to find something to give the photograph balance. I found a twig with buds just a few metres away. I placed this on the tree and was pleased to see that it added just what I felt the photograph needed - more balance and shape. There were no distracting elements.
I used an EOS300D with no flash and automatic settings. There was good light and I knew my camera well. The photograph did not need to be enhanced digitally. The exposure was perfect and all lines were sharp.
I was very pleased with the results and felt that the final photograph on the screen was well balanced in terms of composition, colour and shapes.
