Modern Pilgrimage: A Fusion of Sprituality, Art, Walking, Nature & Culture
Contemporary art work with ancient roots, Codex mini-Documentary (2014)
As I searched for ideas explaining the concept of the modern pilgrimage. I also looked for art to represent / interpret it. I found little of the latter when it comes to qualilty projects, with the exception of the exceptional contemporary art project named 'Codex'. The video above explains this in detail.
Otherwise, the most interesting art is in the form of book covers, some of which I have included below. Graphic design, illustration and photography as well as the names of the book titles, and there are many, help us to see how the modern pilgrimage is represented.
Book covers from Amazon.com
Looking at the range of book covers and titles was revealing but also very helpful. I run a small publishing company with my partner and we focus on walking guides. One of our new guides is to be called 'The Way to Siena'. The research I have done here should prove very useful.
Looking at concepts, we can see that many of the books and covers deal with spirituality, walking, nature and culture. Contemporary art is not a topic covered in the texts although medieval art is. Contemporary art is confined to the covers themselves.
