Seashore Rock

Seashore Rock, Emma Arthur (2013)

I spotted this rock at the local beach while taking a walk. At the end of the beach there is a collection of rocky arms that stretch out into the sea. Some of them have this white lichen growth on them. It's prescence means the air is very clean as it only grows in unpolluted areas. There were some dried out plants growing nearby so I picked one up and placed it on the rock and took this photograph.

It took a while to find the best shot among the rocks. I looked for an interesting line between the white and black - one which would really bring out the contrast between the 'colours'. In addition, I wanted to find a shot which highlighted the texture of both the black and white elements. The star-shaped, dry flower added interest in terms of shape and colour. I was happy with the final result.
