Urban Walking
Suggesting Time, Jeffrey Decoster (2007)
This was used for the back cover, Society of Illustrators Annual 2OO7. I choose it for my blog as I liked the idea of combining drawings with a photograph. Also, I am interested in finding out more about urban walking. The monochrome photograph proves an appropriate background on which to place the various city dwellers. The drawings, which are not drawn to scale, are mainly black while the large character in the middle foreground is brown. Both the colour and size as well as the solidity of her character draw our attention to her. It´s as if she doesn´t fit in. Her stance, clothes and facial expression also indicate this. Perhaps she is in a neighbourhood she is not used to. Her clothes and hair suggest she may be an executive whereas the others seem to be just getting about their business in a casual way. The woman walking a dog is drawn in red but I am unsure as to why, perhaps to give variation and interest.
The way in which the drawings are drawn on the paper, dispersed, overlapping in places, suggests the passing of time. These people may be in this place at different times during the day.
Jeffrey Decoster has several other drawings which are based on the same theme. They all appear on his website.
